Fun Day Sunday

Hello Readers! Before I moved to England I was a nanny for the most amazing family ever! for Marissa who was just entering the 1st grade - I helped her with homework and would drop her off at school daily. Since I have left I have stayed in contact with her and Lindsey (her sister) via iMessage and me sending postcards.  When I come back home for a visit I always love to take the girls out.  I passed the idea to their mother we could either go to the Pet Expo downtown or the Macy's flower show. So here I am (hardly slept much) but I get to the house at 9am and Lindsey doesn't really want to go (which is fine) but Marissa suggested we stay local so we saw The Croods - I knew nothing about this film apart from Nicolas Cage's voice was for one of the characters.

So we hopped into Whitey (my car) and drove to the 10:10am 3D showing.  I had a really great time! Great story line - I was a bit teary at some parts.  After the movie we went to Breadsmith and had a treat.

Here are some photos of Marissa and I and also with Lindsey

 These girls are totally awesome!

can you name another city in England but not London? - This means no cheating!

Ok readers! I will admit when I tell people I've been to school and now live/work in England they always assume London. Don't get me wrong I understand people as London is the capital - but there is so much more than London. I live in Durham, that's 3 1/2 north on train from London and I'm only a 15 minute train journey to Newcastle. Funny enough. Friend of mine was talking about where I'd go if I lost my passport - why the US embassy in London (but theoretically I'm closer to Edinburgh (I believe).

Durham is so AMAZING!
We have a cathedral, lots of shops & restaurants, a river! (Called River Wear) and state of art Durham university! It's slightly similar to Minnesota as he weather get quite cold but when it snows here cars and buses come to a halt.
Where I live with Craig is West Rainton which is approximately 20 minutes outside of Durham. It is a cute village consisting of 2 hair salons, post office, pharmacy, sandwich shop, 2 take-aways, a church, a convenience store and our favorite restaurant, the Italian Farmhouse. I really love living here just wish I could walk to Durham (but that'd take over an hour).

Since May 2012 I have not heard or seen any robberies or crimes in the village. I feel very safe! Also I'm quite happy Craig lives near a bus stop - which is every 10 minutes to Durham (or to Sunderland)

I am including some photos of Durham taken by Craig to show you the beauty!

How Gender Roles Have Changed in Society

A few weeks ago while watching Craig bake I felt inspired to write a post how gender roles have changed in society. Ok I can't remember the 60's or 70's but from books the main role for women were to only housewives + cook etc. I always thought that was demeaning to women - I mean they get treated like an object and have no choice.

At 29 I feel pretty good and confident :) I can cook, bake, clean, etc! But since I've been living with Craig I have such motivation in helping him out around the house :) I mean my cooking skills aren't great but you could say I'm his assistant chef :)

Though the hard part is he also bakes really yummy cakes and breads! So. Try to limit it only to sampling.

Craig is like superman sprinkled with Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry 's sweetness with Russell Brand's quirkiness plus Gok Wan fashion taste! (But Craig is straight!)

A is for Aisle

I really love flying! I don't really get jet lagged between UK and US. I get excited even at looking at airfares and entering the airport and just knowing I'm flying and you're not! (I'm really not bad!) on all flights I'm always able to get my seat of choice - the aisle seat! Well on my first journey from Newcastle Amsterdam I was no problem but when i got on the MSP flight I'm stuck with another girl in the middle seat with two men on the outside. This whole trip from Amsterdam I have been going bonkers - delta you make me feel like a crushed sardine! Not cool at all! Plus the video tv remote wasn't working for me :(

But best part - getting a yummy veggie sandwich and chocolate sundae in a cup mmm (I usually don't eat airline food)
Let's hope April 1 (no joke!) from MSP to Paris hen Newcastle goes smooth!

One last note: I was impressed with my flight on KLM - very friendly flight attendants, they give you. Choice of a free or a savory food item, and they even showed connection times on their monitors on the flight :)

**Minneapolis Bound**

Hello faithful readers! I'm always amazed people are actually intrigued in what I write :)  to give everyone a summary I finished my contract job at Durham Student Union last - it was sad but I know there are so many opportunities out there for me! But bless Gordon, a porter (we say security guard) brought in a chocolate cake for me and Deborah (it washer last day too.) Since becoming unemployed I talked to my mom and she said his oil be a great opportunity to go home as my grandma isn't well.

So in the last few days I've been packing (only hand luggage) , exchanging money, and understanding Craig's order I must fulfill - get a Microsoft  Surface Pro 128gb.

Also I hope in my trip back I can reconnect with friends.

It was really hard saying see you soon to Craig (really nice he took today off + came inside with e to have a Starbucks!) I think I mentioned before he recently had his passport renewed - yep! I was hoping to take him to Msp in May but I know next time he will come.

Though I'm quite he traveler now! Connections don't bother me and I don't really get lost in airports now :)

On one last note: Amsterdam airport is gorgeous! Yes it's quite big but really nice food court and furniture.

K I'm signing off! More blogs to come

Soaring High!

Hello friends - thanks for following about my adventure to pursue my dream to live and work in England. It has been challenging but I have succeeded.  I wanted to share a story of a friend of mine. Her daughter has a dream - not like mine but wants to be the first astronaut to fly to Mars in 2030 - and she has really been active going to space camps, etc.

"I wanted to share an exciting project with you that I have been a part of. Astronaut Abby is a 15 year old who aspires to be the first astronaut to Mars. She has recently been invited by her mentor Astronaut Luca Parmitano to attend his first launch into space. Abby will attend this Russian Soyuz Launch on May 28 as one of his VIP guests. Abby has decided she would like to share this experience with as many kids as possible to ignite passion towards space travel, STEM and dreaming through a series of classroom web chats and visits."

Please show your support by helping out Abby! I have and wish her luck! If I can make my dream possible - Abby can too! But she needs your support!

Ahoy There! I've Been Invite Back!

The following is a guest post by Craig Butters (@craigbutters), who blogs over at www.craigbutters.com and has suffered the past 102 days - what seems like an eternity - with the plight of an American girl, desperately seeking employment I don’t know what anymore in good ol’ Blighty.

It’s been over seven months since I last blogged here (no one ever said I would be contributing regularly), but the last time I did put my words on this very blog post you read in your hundreds and I, Craig Butters – an Englishman on an American blog – held the “most read post” from August through to December.  And then….
….and then Katie wrote something in December that you apparently all wanted to read and my post was relegated into second position on the hit parade.  <Insert sad face here>.  So, rather than sulk and be upset, I’ve decided that I can live with the competition, but thusly I’m back to reclaim my spot with the most read post on this blog – so here it goes, and tell your friends!
Katie Goes GaGa
Living with an American is, as we discovered in my last post not an easy proposition for a Brit used to living alone, but for those 102 days I managed and I kept heading in onedirection – onwards!  I’ve now lost count of the total amount of days it has been, but that’s only because I’ve been having an absolutely blast instead.  I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve laughed and had to invent new ways of keeping this kid entertained; who else had two Christmases?!
Not that it has been a total one way street of course – I’ve been introduced to spa days, massages and proper English tea (who knew you could drink tea in England?).
The one thing that has changed entirely though is that my passion for baking has been re-ignited – never have I had such a willing victim volunteer to sample my kitchen delights; breads, cakes, pies and experimental bakes.
But that is not what this post is about, this post is about driving traffic and letting you enjoy my words; as Steve Jobs’ of Apple once said “It’s more fun to be a pirate than to join the navy.
Catch Up
What to write about then?  If you’ve been following this blog, then you already know exactly what I’ve been getting up to with Katie, so that’s out as far as subject matter is concerned.  I could write about Microsoft, which I often do over on my own blog.  I could tell you all about Surface verse the latest iPad or the advances of Windows Phone compared to the iPhone or Google’s Android operating system.  But those subjects are a perhaps a bit too techie and you may think me a geek if I bore you with the intricate details of the varying technologies on offer today.
I could write about the wonderful sport of Formula 1 and my beloved Ferrari team, but F1 doesn’t travel well when it comes to the Americas and I’m going for maximum exposure here – it is the only way to reach and reclaim the top spot.
The Future of the World
I can tell you about the last book I read (“Abundance”), which I thoroughly enjoyed, which explored the future of our very own planet Earth and how our various scarce resources are being stretched, only for our human being genius to innovate our way out of problems such as the generation of clean drinking water for all, power consumption needs are met, food is readily available, the environment is balanced and most curiously of all the exact reason why Bill Gates wants to invest his money on re-designing the humble toilet….
….but that would be vastly unfair, as you really should buy the book yourself on my recommendation and form your own opinions on the state of the future of the world!
Passport
I could announce the news that I’ve renewed my passport – but there’s not much of a story to it and technically, I’ve already just told you of that news!  I could tell you about the films I’ve seen recently and I could tell you stories about all of the latest gossip and going-ons; but I won’t because you can, quite frankly, get more interesting gossip and (probably) far better film reviews from your local Starbucks barista – and enjoy a great latte at the same time!
Work
The stories I could reel off about my work are absolutely endless – most of you don’t know, I often have a great story from work and on those occasions that I do not, I most likely have a complaint or a grump to bemoan that I could, given time and the inclination, write endlessly about in a most appropriate and entertaining way (most of them would likely make good reading for a future book deal should anyone be interested in financing me at some point in the future?)
I’ve worked most weekends this year, so the stories and events have certainly stacked up.
So What Then?
So, what do I want to tell you in this blog post?  It’s easy, the only thing that I want to tell you and all relay in this blog post message is that all is well and there is lots going on here!  It’s that simple.  Life is good and I’m happy and we hope that you are too.
It’s that simple a message.

----------------------------------------------

A Final Admission
Ok, so maybe that isn’t the end of this post, there is a bit more.  I am, after all as I confessed to earlier a competitive soul and as I stated in the sixth paragraph right under your very nose “this post is about driving traffic”, which is why you’ll have noticed that the entire thing is littered with pop culture and references that are designed to stretch this post into the indexes of the search engines.
That’s right, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).  I may not be an SEO expert, but even I know that by mentioning just a few of the very popular key terms some traffic, no matter how small, may stumble across this very blog and vault me back to the top of the hit parade once again.  Just read back through and you'll see the following:
  • Lady GaGo
  • One Direction
  • Steve Jobs
  • Bill Gates
  • Apple iPad / iPhone
  • Android
  • Microsoft
  • Surface
  • Google
  • Formula 1
  • Ferrari
  • Starbucks
It’s a dirty, cheap tactic, but the competition in me is far too great to pass up an opportunity and prove that I can attract the audiences to my writings – and for that I thank each and every one of you who read along.
My final promise is that my post on this site will be a little more interesting….that is, if I’m ever permitted to guest post here again.  Till then, stay safe, stay well and remember;
“It’s far better to be a pirate, than to join the navy!”

Movie Week/end

Hi Everyone!
I am splitting this blog post into two sections - 1) to let you know of my review of the new Disney Wizard of Oz film and 2) what I did today (Saturday)

The new Wizard of Oz film was in 3D - and thankfully Craigy B had extra glasses so we didn't have to pay extra money. In all I enjoyed the film! I knew James Franco would be in it and that made me happy - But Michelle Williams from Dawson's Creek I didn't know was in it along with Mila Kunis.
I would give the movie a B - I'd see it again but it wasn't a favorite of mine that I would go out and purchase on DVD.

Saturday
Today I got up early because I had a stuffy nose - so I couldn't sleep any longer so decided to put away the dishes.  I also put the trash/recycling out - very organized me :D  Then Craig woke up and turned on SKY to watch the qualifying for F1 - in Australia today and apparently it was quite rainy so it has been postponed til midnight tonight - I don't know if I will manage to stay awake but I know he will be! Then the F1 actual race is on at 4:30am Sunday if all goes well weather wise. I took a shower and lounged around for a bit. We left the house at 9 for the Metro Centre - I asked him if we could go last night as I wanted to get a 2nd interview outfit (since my last day at work was Friday - and I am looking for new work) We spent around 4 1/2 hours wandering around - bought stylish tops/pants and skirt (will post photos tomorrow) all CRAIG chose! Yes women! not only does he cook, drive a sports car, bake etc - he is also great with fashion! I went to the Body Shop to buy body butter for my legs  2 for only 10 pounds :D - and I treated Craig to a nice lunch at Gourmet Kitchen Burger - I had Camembert & Cranberry grilled Chicken Burger with salad, mayo & relish and Craig ordered the Mint Lamb with Homemade mint relish, salad & mayo - along we had onion rings and skinny fries.
We did a little more shopping and I bought a nice aqua color bath mat.

I then started to get a bit tired of shopping and told Craig I didn't want to go back to the house.
We looked at movie listings and went to a great film! I really recommend it!

We are off to see the Wizard......

Ok I know I am just being goofy right now but it's movie night! Craig and I are going to see the new Wizard of Oz in 3D tonight at Cineworld - I will post later to tell everyone what I thought of it!

Sunday

Sunday was Craig's last day of working on weekends this month (and I hope means for rest of the year but who knows!) When he was away yesterday I did the general things such as clean the bathroom, fold laundry, etc. When he came home I was dying to go out - I didn't want to eat out and stores shut early on a Sunday. So spontaneous me decided lets go to Cineworld! It was a really tough decision as there is the new Wizard of Oz in 3D out and also a Jason Statham film.  At 5:30 I decided for us to go see 'Parker' which started at 6.

So we hopped in the car - went to the cash point and got in our seats at the cinema.

I liked the film. Craig thought it was good - not his fav. Here is the trailer.

**Spalicious**

A few weeks ago at work I was talking to Deborah (a coworker) about spas in the Northeast of England.  She gave me a few places to look up online and I was really amazed! So many nice facilities - but so expensive! I then thought I'd go online and search specials similar to groupon and I landed on Red Letter Days - which is just like groupon but has more for experiences such as hot air balloon rides, horse riding, driving a Ferrari, Spa packages, etc.  I found a deal and didn't really know if it was legit - I asked Deborah and she wasn't sure as she purchased a Red Letter Days in the past - and something went wrong or they lost her order. I decided to purchase it - 45 minute Rasul treatment along with use of the facilities + lunch at the Garage Spa (40 minute drive).

We left promptly at 8:30 - it wasn't a sunny drive - was rainy the whole day.
Once we got there - we went inside (similar to Madden's spa) and gave my name and were seated and filled out a form plus what we wanted to order for lunch.  A lady named Amy ushered us inside the facilities room to give us a quick tour of what there is to offer (and boy do they have it all!) .  Once she finished showing us around we got to put our stuff away in the lockers and change into our swim costumes.  We had at least 20 minutes before our Rasul treatment, so we decided to dip into one of the hot tubs inside.

At 10 we walked to our room for the Rasul - it was a big shower room with a bench on each side.  On the counter were two pots - mud and salt.  Also there were two hoses - which we turn on to wash off the salt (exfoliation) at the end. After we applied mud to each other we let it set and steam was suppose to be coming out of a small rectangular hole (which we found out afterwards there was a button we were suppose to press to activate it) - Unfortunately during the treatment Craig got a bloody nose - not sure how it exactly happened - but I had to go get some tissue and a staff member was giving a tour and looked at me in a bit of craze (as I was just in my swimsuit) and I said his nose is bleeding - then the staff joked said I hope you didn't beat him up. Thankfully a few minutes later the blood stopped :D - after we let the mud set in we then salted each other - to exfoliate.  Then we hosed each other! I say it was a water fight :D

We then had about 3 hours left before our lunch.  So we tried all the other facilities - my favorite is the outdoor hot tub - when your inside for a long time and go in steam room etc its nice to get fresh air + the rain gave it a nice refreshing feeling.  Also outside in a carriage wagon is the sauna - we went in for a few minutes but I had to step out because it was too hot!

Another room Craig and I really liked is the Salt Room - quick description from the Garage website:
The Ambient Salt Room is a controlled, relaxing Halotherapy environment, with from salt blocks, forged by nature hundreds of years ago. The salt is cleansing and stimulating and provides drug-free and clinically proven relief for many respiratory and skin conditions such as asthma, psoriasis and eczema.  Natural salt therapy dates back over 200 years and is used around the world in hospitals and health retreats to strengthen the immune system. So, sit back, breathe in the benefits and enjoy the warm soft glow that emanates from the salt blocks.
This is the room we actually fell asleep in - really calm and quiet :D

We also went into the steam room which was very nice! and relaxing.

Also near the hot tubs were 4 giant showers to use. Really nice :D

A little after 1 we went back to our lockers and collected our clothes and went to our rooms to change. We then went into the main entrance and were escorted  by a member of staff at the Morrit Restaurant - which is right next door (plus its a hotel too). We were seated at a nice table and our waiter brought us our food promptly.  I had the Morrit Burger which had tomato chutney, Wensleydale cheese on it along with coleslaw and chips.  Craig had steak with skinny fries.

Then came dessert - I had baked pistachio rhubarb yogurt and Craig had a dark chocolate tart.

In Summary I loved my Spa day with Craigy B. I can't wait to go back again!

The below pictures are taken by me.

We loved just loved hanging in these boys

My fav! The Outdoor Hot Tub

Sauna

indoor hot tubs

swinging chairs outside

Orange Wednesday

Do you love movies? I do! One thing I don't understand is why don't phone companies in the USA do something similar here - Orange, Tmobile and EE offer 2 4 1 specials for cinema tickets.
I love going to movies! Tonight (yesterday) we saw Safe Haven - by my favorite author Nicholas Sparks - who wrote The Note Book. Craig knew it would be a chick flick and seemed to have no issues. We got to the cinema early so we popped over to ASDA to grab some snacks. I usually go to chick flicks by myself as I always cry at some point - and Craig wiped away my tears and comforted me after the film. I high suggest this film to females (and guys if you like that chick flicks) - great acting and wonderful scenary!

Important to stay healthy

Every year I go to the Minnesota State Fair I go straight to the Kare 11 Health Barn - to get screened for Diabetes. Yes that is right - I don't grab any food once I go through the gates.  It is really simple I fill out a small form and they prick my finger and I instantly know my result.  I always do this because Diabetes runs in my family and I don't want to get it! So recently (Monday) I went to the doctor for a general checkup (can you believe it NO COPAY!) I am happy that I DO NOT HAVE DIABETES - my results were great! I need to continue exercising and eating healthy.
